Hello everyone ! Some news & notes about things going on at Emmanuel ….
Church Membership
Adam and Valerie Uthlaut have finished the 101 membership course, “Discovering Christ & the Church,” and have met with the Elder Board for their membership interview. We are pleased to present them to you as candidates for membership at Emmanuel. We have enjoyed having Adam, Valerie, Lila, and Lorena as part of the Emmanuel family for a number of years, and we give praise to God for His work in their lives, as well as for their partnership in ministry.
Winter Blast
Weather permitting, about thirty of our JAM kids are on their way this weekend to Winter Blast at Hidden Acres, the Central District’s family camp, near Ames, Iowa. Let’s be praying for God’s powerful work in the lives of these kids this weekend … and let’s pray for the adult team going with the kids – Rich Brune, Darrel Boyer, Lindsey Engemann, Ashley Smith, Becky Aldrich, and Jeff Roth.
Pastor Search Team
Our new Pastor Search Team met for the first time yesterday evening, alongside the Elder Board. You’ve elected a really great team ! Let’s be sure to pray for its members – Becky Aldrich, Rich Brune, Laura Maddox, Allison Roth, and Lucas Schneider.
Elder Board
Our new Elder Board met for the first time yesterday with all its members present. Alex Grieshaber will be the new chairperson of the Elder Board. Larry Shoemaker will serve as vice-chairperson, and Chris Neale will be the secretary. The elders divided up their responsibility for oversight of various ministries at Emmanuel in this way :
Worship : Tom Rea
Spiritual Formation (adult studies) : Larry Shoemaker
Youth Ministry : Mike Horstmann
Support Ministries : Mike Mahoney
Fellowship : Alex Grieshaber
Outreach : Chris Neale
Larry will also be working closely with, and providing oversight for, the Pastor Search Team.
Discovery Bible Study
This Sunday morning, in addition to the adult class on the Book of Acts, a new study will begin called “Discovery Bible Study.” We will meet in the dining room at church at 9:00.
Studies show that 90% of what people remember and apply to their lives comes through self-discovery. Discovery Bible Study is based on the words of Jesus in John 6:44-45, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. … It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore, everyone who hears and has learned from the Father comes to Me.”
The Discovery Bible Study method has as its goal to help people immerse themselves in the Word in such a way that we will be led to lives of loving obedience and spiritual reproduction. It is a simple and effective study that makes use of about ten questions which are used week after week. In addition, you will find that the following are all results of your participation in a DBS :
You will grow close to a small group of people.
You will have the potential to master just about any subject in the Bible.
You will learn an easy, transferable Bible study tool which you can then use to lead people in your social networks in the study of the Bible.
This is the Bible study method we are currently using in our Sunday night men’s group and in one of our young people’s Ignite groups. Come find out what it’s all about !
See you Sunday !
