Last time before JAM we started kind of a basics and foundations class with our small groups (Ignite). We are going through a book called Christianity Explored, and it stimulates good conversation about some basics in who Jesus is, and the life He calls us to.
It started off by asking the kids if you could ask God any questions what would it be. What would yours be?
As I asked them, and they gave their answers, I told them that all of your questions about God are answered in Jesus. Read about him in the Bible (especially the gospels). If you do that, you will get acquainted with God. Minds. Blown.
How are we acquainted with God. As I was reading this morning, I read through the psalm that was quoted in the lesson (a part I didn’t get to with the kids yet) relative to Jesus calming the storm:
they, too, observed the Lord’s power in action,
his impressive works on the deepest seas.
25 He spoke, and the winds rose,
stirring up the waves.
26 Their ships were tossed to the heavens
and plunged again to the depths;
the sailors cringed in terror.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards
and were at their wits’ end.
28 “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
29 He calmed the storm to a whisper
and stilled the waves.
30 What a blessing was that stillness
as he brought them safely into harbor!
31 Let them praise the Lord for his great love
and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
32 Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation
and before the leaders of the nation. (Psalm 107)
Never made this connection before with Jesus calming the storm in the gospels. This psalm describes what kind of God Israel had. This is the kind of Jesus we have. A Jesus who calms storms to a whisper with a Word. Who helps us in distress. A keeper over the chaos. The God of these JAM kids. Our God. The God of the whole universe. Let’s exalt him publicly before the congregation!
