Day of Prayer
Tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Church from noon ‘til 7 pm
What is it ?
A Day of Prayer is when we, as a church, set aside a large portion of a day to gather for prayer. We do this about once a quarter, so it’s a special day … one God has honored and responded to in the past. At other times, we may gather in the evening for what is sometimes called a “concert” of prayer. Tomorrow, we are setting aside seven full hours for prayer as a church, and I hope you’ll be a part of it !
When I was a missionary in France, all our French missionaries gathered from around the country once a quarter to pray together. It was an event we didn’t want to miss ! God’s work is always accomplished through prayer !
When is it ?
The church will be open for prayer from noon until 7 pm. Come when you can ; stay as long as you can. Come more than once during the day if you would like. You’ll find different people there all throughout the day.
What will I end up doing if I come ?
Tomorrow, we will do a number of different things, but primarily we’re going to be praying for the individuals and ministries that make up Emmanuel. We’ll read Scripture together to help prompt us in our praying ; we’ll pray for requests individuals and ministry team leaders have already submitted for this special day ; and we’ll pray for you and the requests you bring with you to the church tomorrow. We’ll use the recent Spring Semester Activity Guide to pray for upcoming events and ministry needs at Emmanuel. We’ll pray for our missionaries. You may also want to find a corner of the church where you can pray by yourself or with a prayer partner.
I sense this is a time of exciting spiritual movement at Emmanuel. Young people have come to Christ ; a new ladies Bible study is beginning ; others are engaged in personal discipleship for the first time. There is an important men’s event coming up Saturday. There are also tremendous needs – spiritual, relational, financial, health, and employment needs. In the church, we have new officers serving in positions in the church, and they need our prayers too !
When you come, there may be several people there to pray with, or there may just be one or two others. One of the pastors will be there to help facilitate the prayer time. Come with an expectation of meeting God in a special quiet time at the beginning of this new year !
Why should I bother ?
First of all, you’ll meet some other neat people from Emmanuel and have a chance to pray with people you may have never prayed with before ! You’ll be surprised at how many wonderful pray-ers we have at Emmanuel !
Second (as mentioned above), you will encounter the Lord. “The prayer of the upright is His delight !” (Proverbs 15:8). God waits to do great things until we pray, because it’s only as we pray that we see it is He who makes things happen, not us !
You will serve other people, the church, our nation, and the world as we pray for God to move powerfully according to His promises. You will have an opportunity to ask, seek, and knock … for yourself and for others (Matthew 7:7).
Finally, you will be encouraged : “Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18.1). In many respects, the Lord has laid two options before us : pray … or give up. Come pray with us tomorrow !
See you there !
